[#HerStory] Confession of an engineering girl: How to Embrace a Softer Life to Overcome My Burnout & Guilt

Sharing is caring!

Hello, this is Claire, an engineering undergrad and I’m happy to share my experience for The Sunny Club readers on my burnout story as a student. The first time I experienced the stress of non-stop hustling was back in college. I’d feel genuinely uneasy if I wasn’t glued to my engineering textbooks or buried under piles of assignments. Productivity became a weird form of self-worth. Even when my body wasn’t tired, my mind was constantly drained, just from the anxiety of “not doing enough.” It wasn’t ambition. It was burnout dressed up as discipline.

Eventually, I hit a wall. And surprise, the wall didn’t care about my GPA. That’s when I started craving something softer. Slower. Saner.

The Soft Life Hustle as an Engineering Student

But let’s be clear: the soft hustle life isn’t just about manifesting and trusting the universe while lighting a candle and hoping your bills pay themselves. We still have work to do, we’re just being more intentional about it. We’re not here to romanticize laziness; we’re here to say: you can slow down and still thrive.

Many of us spent our twenties hustling 24/7, constantly trying to prove ourselves – to our bosses, our families, or some imaginary panel of judges we thought were keeping score. But now? Now it’s about honoring your peace as much as your productivity. Choosing softness doesn’t mean giving up; it means evolving.

So if you’re ready to leave the pressure-cooker lifestyle behind and embrace softness without feeling like you’re falling behind, here’s how to make that shift, one mindful step at a time.

Only Do 3 High-Energy Tasks Per Day

If you’re trying to embrace a slower life and still get things done, it starts with changing how you define productivity. It’s not about being busy from sun-up to sun-down, it’s about being intentional with your time and energy.

Instead of pouring your energy into 15 scattered to-dos and ending the day feeling like you accomplished nothing, try this: focus on just three high-energy tasks a day. That’s it. Three things that actually move the needle (whether it’s for your work, your personal growth, your finances, or your well-being).

This is what it really means to work smarter, not harder. You’re directing your best energy into tasks that give you the highest return on investment, so you’re not constantly spinning your wheels and calling it “the grind.”

Once your key tasks are done, the rest of your day can be filled with low-energy tasks: organizing your space, replying to emails, folding your laundry while binge-watching your favorite comfort show (we’ve all been there). You’re still getting things done, just without the chaos.

Being picky with what you do isn’t selfish, it’s strategic. Because when you stop trying to do everything, you make space to enjoy your life again, without guilt and without the non-stop hustle.

Eliminate What Doesn’t Help You Evolve

Think of this as spring cleaning for your soul and schedule.

If you want to slow down and still thrive, you have to get brutally honest about what (or who) is taking up unnecessary space in your life. Ask yourself:

  • Is this still aligned with who I’m becoming?
  • Does this drain me or energize me?
  • Would future-me thank me for this?

Because here’s the thing, protecting your peace is a full-time job, and not everything (or everyone) gets to make the cut.

Some habits, commitments, or even relationships simply won’t fit into your soft life era. And that’s okay. They had their purpose, they helped shape you, but now it’s time to let them go. The lighter your emotional and mental load, the more room you’ll have to breathe, create, and actually enjoy your life.

Letting go might feel scary at first, but what you gain—freedom, mental clarity, and a deeper connection to yourself—is worth it every time.

Schedule Self Care

Let’s be real, self care isn’t always candles, skincare, and bath bombs. Sometimes, it’s logging off on time. Sometimes, it’s saying “no” without a 5-paragraph explanation. Other times, it’s doing the boring stuff like meal prepping, budgeting, or finally booking that therapy session.

To really embrace softness, you need to schedule the things that make you feel good, just like you would a meeting. That might mean a solo coffee run, journaling in the morning, or literally just lying in bed doing nothing without guilt. Rest is productive, too.

The key is to build a routine that includes rituals and habits not just for work, but for your well-being. A strong self care routine supports your goals more than any all-nighter ever will. It keeps you from hitting burnout mode and quietly resenting your own to-do list.

Rest and self care are not luxuries, they’re part of the strategy for creating your dream life. Take them seriously. Prioritize them. Your future self will thank you for it.

Trust Your Heart, Know What Works for You

Here’s the truth: everyone’s version of the slow life looks different. For some, it’s waking up at 6AM to journal and walk their dog. For others, it’s working in short bursts and then binge-watching true crime documentaries in fuzzy socks.

Instead of forcing yourself to keep up with unrealistic standards, try listening to your body and your energy levels. If you only have 3–4 hours a day of deep, focused energy, then use those hours well, and let that be enough. The rest of the day doesn’t have to be filled just for the sake of looking “busy.”

Also: let go of those self-imposed deadlines. You’re not a machine. You don’t need to hustle yourself into exhaustion to prove your worth. Be kind to yourself. Adjust your schedule before burnout forces you to.

Soft life productivity is about designing your days in a way that supports your peace and your purpose. So go ahead and build a rhythm that actually works for you, not one that works against you.

Final Thoughts

If there’s one thing to take from all this, it’s that it’s safe to embrace slow living. You’re allowed to pause, to rest, to move at a pace that feels right for you, even if the world around you is sprinting.

On some days, your best might look like checking off three major tasks. On other days, your best might be giving 10%, and that’s still enough. If you showed up for yourself with intention, then you’ve already done what matters.

So breathe. Reassure yourself. You’re not lazy, you’re not behind, and you’re definitely not failing. You’re simply choosing a life that honors your peace, your energy, and your evolution.
